Over 10 million people in East Africa are desperately short of food. While the United Nations recently announced an end of famine conditions in Somalia, it warns that efforts to restore food security and help normalize people’s lives are urgently needed. The drought that hit the Horn of Africa in 2011 led to tens of thousands of deaths, the UN reported, and 9.5 million people still require emergency assistance in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. In spite of the urgency of this disaster, most Americans are not aware of the crisis and have little knowledge about East Africa. Join Women In Islam, Inc.’s forum to learn more about the history of the region, the role of aid policies and the gender violence impacting women and children who have been displaced.
